A Conceptual Review on Present Age Media Audiences with Reference to Psychology & Sociological Perspectives
Dr. M. Shanmugathai
Abstract:
The right meaning of the expression media audiences surely is based on ones perspective of the role of communication in society. Present day media audiences are a collective group who can be readers, listeners and viewers of different media or their various components. Audience, therefore, can read or view the message of media in terms of their needs, tastes and experiences. They negotiate its various meanings, accepting or declining or rereading the open and latent (implicit and explicit) layers of meanings. However, audiences do not interact with media messages as a mass, but rather as a family, a cultural group, a social class, a caste or a tribal group and at times as individuals. This chapter presents an understanding of the present age audiences and their psychology, sociology and the way they perceive and reflect due to choice of words they come across. It is suggested that there is an important criterion for an individual to play a successful role in any kind of circumstances, that is, critical thinking. Critical thinking can facilitate people to take sound decisions in their personal as well as public affairs and they realize how psychological and sociological implications may play a pivotal role in their understanding of views expressed through mass media and their positive reflections to contribute for the betterment of the society.
