The Character Assassination and Revelation of One’s Self

S. Nithya, Dr.A.R Chitra and S. Muruga Rajan

Abstract:

The study focuses on Dattani's psychological realism. The majority of researchers have focused on issues like the impact of social realism, dispelling stereotypes, characters, character assassination, self-disclosure, and using one's voice to represent reality. This study centers on the theme of sexuality, which is central to Dattani's plays and sets him apart from other playwrights. Since no research has been done on LGBTQ issues in Dattani's plays and Indian English drama, this study is unique. Given the ongoing discussions in India regarding the decriminalization of homosexuality and the historic ruling rendered by the Delhi High Court in the Naz Foundation case on July 2, 2009, this study becomes even more pertinent. Even consensual sex between people of the same sex is now illegal under the repeal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The queer movement in India now has more public space thanks to this ruling. After completing a thorough analysis of Dattani's plays and a survey of the literature, the researcher discovered a gap that needed to be filled. Dattani's groundbreaking attempt to address the LQBTQ issues was the research gap that was thus identified. The researcher has tried to investigate the psychological realism in a few of Dattani's plays using Freud's mental iceberg, Carl G. Jung's theory of the unconscious, and the framework of queer theory in light of this research gap and the possibility for a thorough investigation in this field.
