Workplace Attitude of Employees with Disabilities towards Building Workplace Inclusiveness

Abstract:

People with disabilities (PWD) face many challenges when integrating into the workforce. Moreover, overcoming co-workers and employers negative attitudes and perceptions is one such challenge. There is a misconception that PWD are less competent and physically not fit to face the workplace difficulties. They need just supplement training and development to cope up with any kind of situation. Several studies proved that such employees have positive attitude and are more willing to hire and integrate them into the workforce. The researches in PWDs reveal that there are challenges like unfriendly work environment, stereotyping, lack of required skills, work stress, absenteeism, labour turnover, health complications, etc. This chapter is an attempt to understand the outcome of attitude of PWD towards workplace and comprehend their experiences at workplace. A sample of 50 PWDs have been included from different sectors that have disabilities related to hearing, vision and orthopedic. It is to be noted that the employees considered for the survey have displayed a favourable attitude towards workplace despite several shortcomings. The employers need to nurture diverse workplace and help economic growth by providing opportunities to utilize the latent potentials of PWDs. The prevailing inadvertent discrimination is to be totally avoided and design inclusive strategies towards nation building process.
