Catalyst Role of SHGs in Transforming Rural Women into Entrepreneurs
Dr. Rajani Levaku
Abstract:
Women entrepreneurs play an important role in the present economy, wherein a large number of micro-enterprises in developing countries are undertaken by women. The rural women have their primary responsibility of agricultural production in addition to domestic responsibilities and childcare. In developing countries like India where economic status of women is very pathetic, especially in rural areas, the opportunities for earning are very less in this scenario. The Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have paved way for economic independence of women. The entrepreneurship may be a force that mobilizes other resources to meet the unmet market demand, the ability to create and build something from practically nothing. It is a process of creating value by pulling together a unique package of resources to exploit an opportunity. Indian women entrepreneurs are showing their presence in new areas like herbal marketing, food processing, farming, handicraft, readymade garments, dairying, etc. India envisions a future in which Indian women are independent and self-reliant. It is unfortunate that because of centuries of inertia, ignorance and conservatism, the actual and potential role of women in the society has been ignored, preventing them from making their rightful contribution to social progress. Findings revealed that different factors compelled rural women to start their entrepreneurial activities, but varieties of problems are faced by them in establishing and running their business ventures. Problem ranges from financial, marketing, production, etc., and the problems of women entrepreneurs are far more than their men counterparts due to the existence of societal taboos and restrictions. Considering the economic importance of developing entrepreneurship among women, the government shall design a suitable scheme to attract women towards entrepreneurship and help their enterprises to survive.
