Wireless Transmission and Monitoring of ECG Signals in Holter Monitor Test using WiMAX

Eshan Kumar Gupta and Lalith Nag Sharan

Abstract:

Wireless monitoring of physiological parameters such as heart rate, is one of the vital tools of non-invasive diagnostics in use today. In tests like Holter Monitor test, there has been an increasing requirement for efficient means of wireless data transmission over a large distance, which overcomes the challenging tasks of portability of devices and the mobility of patients during the test. In rural areas, there is restricted access to mobile and cellular technologies which restricts effective care-giving. Therefore, there is an immediate need for a new technology which provides easy access to monitoring and transmission of data. The purpose of this paper is to provide a means of wireless access using the technology of WiMAX (IEEE 802.16). By setting up of WiMAX base stations at the reception site and WiMAX receivers at the analysis site and in the Holter Monitor machine, data can be transmitted effectively over a range of 100 km. This paper will give a detailed review of the technologies such as Bluetooth, ZigBee and Wi-Fi along with the concept of using WiMAX for wireless data transmission and its advantages over these technologies.
