Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Based on VBM Computing of MR Brain Volume

A. Neethu Anto and T. Manjula

Abstract:

As Alzheimer?s is a progressive degenerative disease that attacks brain. Thus the diagnosis of alzheimer?s is very much important. The work here is concerned with Voxel Based Morphometry (VBM) incorporating normalisation, segmentation and smoothing. The result gives an active region which further needs an evaluation to justify the diagnosis. When properly processed, output images from VBM can represent foundations for diagnostic purposes. An integrated approach is used to take advantage of VBM?s ability to fine segmentation based on voxel comparisons of Gray Matter (GM), White Matter (WM) and Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF). The result of which renders the proper diagnosis of Alzheimer?s. The VBM approach to extract the MR brain image features voxel by voxel and classify them into various sets of classes for proper identification of Alzheimer?s. A VBM approach has been introduced to overcome the individual weaknesses and to offer more appealing features. This approach is highly useful in the medical field as it helps in providing proper treatment for various stages of cognitive impairment.
